Demonstrators protest against killings of Ethiopian Christians in Libya

addis demo 6ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia—More than 100,000 Ethiopians protested the killing of Ethiopian Christians in Libya and their own government’s failure to raise living standards of the poor, with poverty fueling the flow of migrants through dangerous areas.
The government-supported march Wednesday at Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square turned violent as stone-throwing protesters clashed with the police, who arrested at least 100 people.
The protesters said, “We want revenge for our sons blood,” referring to Ethiopians seen being beheaded or shot in a video released Sunday by the extremist group Islamic State. The Ethiopian victims are widely believed to have been captured in Libya while trying to reach Europe.
Ahaza Kassaye, the mother of one of the victims identified as Eyasu Yikunoamlak, said during the protest Wednesday that she was overwhelmed by the massive turnout.
“I’m happy now. I’m very happy. I was just mourning the death of my son with family members and my neighbors. I never expected this to happen,” she said.
Ms. Ahaza, who had to seek shelter in a cafe when the protest turned violent, said she hoped the government would react to the killings by closing all illegal border crossings and arresting suspected human traffickers.

Even as the Islamic State killings have roiled many here, some young people in Addis Ababa said they would still attempt the perilous journey to Europe, often via Sudan and then Libya, if they had enough money to cover the smugglers’ fees.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said that, while poverty was the root cause of the migrations, smugglers were to blame for encouraging poor people to pursue what he called “the death journey.”
Ethiopian lawmakers on Tuesday were debating a possible response to the Islamic State killings, but it remains unclear if military action is an option. The government has announced three days of nationwide mourning over the killings.

Libya detains 600 migrants as Europe struggles with tragedies

Libya said on Tuesday it had stopped several boats packed with migrants since this weekend’s shipwreck disaster, and that it was detaining more than 600 Africans who were hoping to reach Europe.

Libya was thrown into chaos following the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 and has become a major hub for migrants heading to Italy on rickety boats.
The Mediterranean shipwreck that killed 800 migrants this weekend has sent shockwaves across Europe. Protesters gathered in front of the Italian Parliament on Tuesday, carrying numbers representing the lives lost at sea and urging governments to do more to help migrants in danger.
“We are here to ask for human rights protection of migrants and refugees, because there is a need in the Mediterranean Sea that European governments should put in place the search and rescue operation,” said Fernando Chironda, a member of Amnesty International who attended the demonstration in Rome.
The European Union has proposed doubling the size of its search-and-rescue effort in the Mediterranean and an emergency summit is scheduled for Thursday.

A decision to scale back Italy’s search-and-rescue operations last year – amid budget pressures and criticism that rescuing migrants lures more to cross – appears to have only increased the risks for migrants, without lowering the numbers attempting the journey.
The UN said that if nothing is done, more than 30,000 migrants could die this year alone.
The Italian coast guard said 750 migrants were rescued from rubber dinghies in various operations since Monday. Merchant ships and coast guard patrol boats also helped a fishing boat carrying migrants off the southeastern coast of Calabria, in mainland Italy. All 446 aboard were rescued.
